COVID-19: Outbreak detected at St. Paul’s Hospital NICU

An outbreak of COVID-19 has been detected in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at St. Paul’s Hospital.

Vancouver Coastal Health declared the outbreak in a bulletin that was last updated at 3:28 p.m on Thursday. The bulletin indicates that restrictions have been imposed.

The NICU provides neonatal services to premature infants, ill full-term newborns and infants transferred from other neonatal facilities with ongoing specialized care needed.

Providence Health Care operates the hospital.

There were 21 new cases of COVID-19 reported in British Columbia between noon Wednesday and noon Thursday and no deaths. No new health-care outbreaks were reported by provincial health officials on Thursday afternoon.

There are 192 active cases of the disease in British Columbia, of which 15 were being treated in hospital including three in intensive care.
